About the Opportunity

We are seeking an accomplished executive leader to serve as Vice President, Market Operations & Resource Planning for a leading electric utility. This highly visible leadership role is responsible for directing wholesale energy market operations, long-term resource planning, portfolio optimization, forecasting, and enterprise energy risk management.

The ideal candidate will provide strategic leadership to ensure a reliable, affordable, and sustainable power supply while navigating evolving wholesale markets, regulatory requirements, renewable energy integration, and long-term utility planning. This executive will play a critical role in shaping future energy strategy while leading high-performing technical teams and supporting enterprise-wide operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures prudent risk management and compliant operations for Austin Energy’s wholesale market activities.
  • Oversees development of the generation and resource plan for Austin Energy in support of established policy and goals.
  • Oversees development of models and forecasts to support wholesale market strategy and Austin Energy financial forecasts.
  • Bears responsibility for overall affordability of Austin Energy Power Supply Adjustment (including Fuel Adjustment Charge) cost and forecast.
  • Oversees staff engaged in fuel and energy portfolio and risk management program and daily wholesale market operations functions.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable Local, State, and Federal regulations, requirements, standards, and laws.
  • Ensures compliance with all safety, reliability, North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), and environmental standards and requirements.
  • Develops and monitors business plans and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) and Capital budgets and responds to deviations from the approved cost/timeline projections.
  • Communicates legislative, regulatory, and industry trends impacting Austin Energy’s initiatives.
  • Develops team members to execute plans consistent with Austin Energy’s initiatives and objectives. Promotes confidence and public trust through communications and actions.

Qualifications

  • Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering, Business, or in a field related to the job.
  • Minimum 7 years of electric utility experience, including 5 years in a management role.
  • Graduation with a Master's degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for two (2) years of non-managerial experience.
  • Experience may substitute for education up to the maximum of four (4) years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing and implementing short- and long-range plans and programs associated with generation portfolio diversity, optimization and risk management
  • Effective people management skills including developing direct reports, fostering a culture of diversity, and empowering an engaged workforce
  • Affinity for innovative and emerging technologies to enable clean energy goals while maintaining affordability and reliability for customers
  • Experience promoting a culture of compliance with environmental standards and reliability requirements
  • Experience working with and presenting to higher-level authorities like City Council, commissions, or Boards of Directors
  • Experience engaging with and presenting to community stakeholders on complex, technical topics related to energy management and resource planning
